The days of finding a nice and affordable longhood (pre ’73) 911 to build a cool sport purpose/outlaw are long gone. As a result, we have seen a rise in prices of the “G-series” Porsches. In particular, the ’87-’89 examples with the G50 gearboxes have become very desirable with the last year ‘89s becoming some of the most sought after. They only made 1,156 coupes in 1989 so the selection is slim. However, every once in a while, an ’89 coupe that is affordable comes available. This one is a great start to becoming something very cool while it is a nice driver as it sits.
This Carrera was built on August 12th, 1988. It was ordered with the following factory options:

Although not much is known about the early history on this 911, we do know that it has been in California for the last 20-years. The current owner purchased it about a year ago from a friend/mechanic, as it was the perfect platform to continue its “outlaw” development. Unfortunately, he only drove it about 1,000-miles as he was too consumed with other projects to enjoy this 911.
I was excited to help this owner sell his Carrera. There just aren’t many “affordable” and decent G50 Carreras out there let alone a last year ’89. Since we didn’t know much about the early history, we took the car to our local Porsche specialist and had him do an inspection including leakdown (off of 100%) and compression tests. The results were very good:

The car showed to be very dry and straight. There were no signs of accidents or rust. The floors and front pan are original and in very good shape (see pics). One of the oil lines to the front oil cooler had a dent (see pic) where someone obviously jacked up the car from the wrong place…however, there are no leaks from it and the oil cooler works properly. The clutch master cylinder needed replacing, so they took care of that including the hydraulic clutch hose and a fresh oil service with a new filter. The bottom of the motor is very dry. There was just a slight weeping at the left cam tower. Also, there was a dab of JB weld on the engine case next to the oil cooler. It looks like a bracket might have rubbed a long time ago on the case and it was patched. The repair is just slightly moist. However, it appears to have done the trick. New oil return tubes had been recently installed as well. Also, we believe the clutch was replaced as well.
This Carrera is in very nice condition and would make a great driver for daily use or touring events. The car was repainted over a decade ago when the steel flares were added. It was a decent job, however, it is showing some age with minor blemishes from use (see pics). There are some paint flaws on the roof as well. There were 964 turbo rocker moldings on the car at one point, but they were removed leaving exposed mounting holes. The front IROC bumper has scrapes on the underside with a crack (see pic). The BBS wheels were recently restored and are wrapped in near new Continental tires. The brakes have more than half-life remaining. All the glass is original, including the windscreen, and is in very good condition. The driver’s door stay is broken and needs to be repaired. All the steel panels are original and there are VIN stickers on the doors, hood, and engine case.
The interior is also very nice and was in the process of being converted to a more light-weight look. The sport seats have no tears and just mild wear on the exit bolsters. The original carpet is in very good condition. The door panels are new. The power windows work properly, but need surround clips to better hold in the switches. The dash has some cracks and the stereo hole/knee pad was modified for a larger screen style modern stereo unit. The headliner looks good with just some wrinkles and slight tear at the edge near the sunroof panel. The driver door lock does not work with the key. All the gauges work including the clock. All the power windows, sunroof, and electric mirrors work properly. We just serviced the A/C system and it blows cold.
This G50 Carrera drives great. It has excellent power and throttle response. The clutch feels tight and the car shifts smoothly. The JWest shifter assembly squeaks a bit. The brakes have excellent bite and the steering is precise. The right front tire will rub on the oil cooler with full left wheel lock but no rubbing with normal driving. With countless fun vintage touring events available throughout the country, this would be a perfect example for such use.
California registration is paid through October of 2017 and it just passed California’s strict smog certification test.
This Carrera comes with a space saver spare, Certificate of Authenticity, and tool kit.
